Computers with Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system are starting to appear at CRHS. Windows 8 is a new redesign; it represents an attempt by Microsoft to blend mobile and desktop experiences more seamlessly and it's packed with interesting new features, like a touchscreen friendly tiled interface.
But users will find enough familiar features to make the switch to Windows 8 relatively easy. See Microsoft's introduction to Windows 8 or download and print this handy cheat sheet about shortcuts and touchscreen moves.
A few things you need to know about Windows 8
- The first time you log in, the computer will take a little while to set up your account. This is normal.
- The corners and edges of the screen are hotspots. Roll the mouse into the top right corner to open the 'Charms Bar'--or jus swipe in from the right edge. You can search, manage devices, change settings and more from this area.
- The familiar Desktop is now an app, that runs on top of the Windows 8 interface. To get to the more familiar layout, roll the mouse pointer into the lower left and click 'Desktop' Or just choose the 'Desktop' app from the start screen. To go back to the Start screen, click 'Start' in the charms bar or roll the pointer into the lower left.
- In Desktop view, 'pin' apps to the taskbar for easy access. Just drag the icons into the taskbar along the bottom of the screen. Or just right-click the icon on the desktop and choose 'Pin to taskbar'.
